By taking control of Sam, we can finally move around in the scenery around us. In the middle of the trees, a path then takes shape leading to a point of view which will be the scene of many memories. Different points of interest are arranged in the decor and it is easy to interact with them. Like this map which will allow you to see the entire city below. A playing field that we guess then rather substantial divided into different zones: the river, the city, the mine, etc. Certain elements, of course, will only be present to strengthen the universe of the game when others will be important to progress in the plot of Twin Mirror. And so, a little further, Sam plunges into his memories in contact with a telescope installed on the promontory.

When the past gets involved
The instant Sam touches this telescope, the character switches dimension. Indeed, the world around us changes and we move from the real world to the world of memories. Called Mind Palace (or Palais Mental in French) , the latter allows you to dive into the memory of the protagonist. We then evolve along a path that allows us to relive key moments related to important people in Sam Higgs' life. In a few scenes, which take place as we move forward, we understand why this place is special. It was here, years earlier, that our hero experienced a heavy disappointment in love, a disappointment undoubtedly at the origin of his departure from Basswood.

These memories and events that we relive through the Mind Palace allow us to better understand Sam's past. And, in doing so, new centers of interest are discovered around, like this heart engraved in the bark of a tree, innocuous at first glance, and which turns out to be a relic of this relationship of yesteryear. We can therefore interact with and learn more about the characters in Twin Mirror. All the information collected, through the Mind Palace or via these interactions, is then centralized in a journal that will be essential to solve the thriller in which DONTNOD plunges us.

Because the adventures of Sam Higgs obviously do not boil down to returning to his hometown. Former investigative journalist, our protagonist will have to clarify a number of mysterious events. Starting with the accidental death of his friend, Nick, about which his goddaughter has some doubts. The latter, Joan, will also give the answer to Sam once he arrives in town. At nightfall, in front of the bar where the funeral vigil in honor of the deceased is celebrated, the two characters begin an exchange which highlights the choices we will have to make throughout the adventure. Choices which will have for the most part consequences on the history that we will live, but to different degrees. And that's where Sam Higgs' complex personality comes into its own.

Both sides of the mirror
The former journalist is indeed disturbed. Shooted on drugs, undoubtedly subject to insomnia and anxiety, man has an alter-ego within him. A “clean” identity that manifests itself at times of stress, during important choices to be made by Sam. “The Double”, as it is called in the excerpt we attended, materializes on screen as the time freezes around our heroes. Sam and his alter-ego exchange and confront their opinions on the situations unfolding in front of them. Enigmatic, this entity makes it possible to apprehend situations with a different perspective, an understanding other than that of Sam.And, as a consequence, this duality exposes us to drastically opposed choices. Far from the Manichaeism that this could engender, it seems that The Double brings a real alternative to the players. Neither good nor bad, it simply draws better the interpretations and nuances that the same situation can generate.
